Soon to be the 10th anniversary of completion, the building of the Department of Architecture in SNU is required to be extended due to demands of more spaces as a result of an increased number of students. Shared with other departments, space for the Department of Architecture is restricted to only the fifth floor which is the top floor of a massive building, and it causes them to cut off from outside. The main purpose of the last project of an undergraduate course is proposing annex to it.
To create a new identity for the department, I designed single transparent box floating on the ground supported by three rigid concrete cores which are looking contrastively different from existing building. An outer surface is covered with ETFE(Ethylene TetrafluoroEthylene) film that allows much transparency so that whole architectural components can be seen as a single object. Rather than stacking activities in a multi-story building, every room or floors allocated for each program—such as critic room, design studio, lecture room, and library, etc.—are hanging from the upper mega-truss structure. Projected on a transparent surface, every single activity and movement of students are shown as a new identity of the department itself.
